We see a lot of packaged diet foods on the shelf these days. These may be promoted as Lite, Diet, low carb, low calorie, or low fat foods. But since the US has a big obesity problem, and since we Americans buy a lot of diet foods, one has to question these packaged foods.

These days, experts advise us to concentrate on eating a large percentage of real food that contain a high water content. Obvious examples are almost any fruit or vegetable. These foods help us feel satisfied without adding a lot of calories to our diets.
Take Meat on the Side
You do not have to give up your favorite foods either. You should just reorganize the way you take portions of foods. Instead of piling your plate high with roast beef, pile it with salad and veggies. Put a little meat on the side, or chop it up to sprinkle over your salad. Your stomach will still tell your brain you ate a lot of food, but you may consume half the calories!

Fruit is nature's candy, and even kids will be happy to grab handfuls of sweet grapes instead of junk food. You can eat a lot of grapes for the same calories you get in one candy bar. In fact, you will probably decide that you do not even want to eat that many grapes. You will be full.
Chocolate as Diet Food
You can certainly drink chocolate on a diet. Try to satisfy your chocolate craving with chocolate skim milk or hot chcolate. It really has few calories for the protein, vitamins, and minerals it provides. Compare that to a candy bar or sugary soda. If you have not had chocolate milk for a long time, it may be time to add it back to your diet.
Food That Actually Take Away Calories
You can still enjoy your favorite foods. But if you dice up some veggies for your pasta sauce, you can reduce the amount of calories per serving. You can still eat the same portions, and even take seconds, without adding calories to your diet. If you feel satisfied that you have eaten enough food, you will be unlikely to overeat later too.
Other foods are so high in fiber that they do not add real calories to your diet. Konnyaku noodles are a popular example. These can be used as pasta, or mixed with regular pasta. They add fiber, but do not add calories.
Eating Out
You can go to your favorite restaurants. Try to start your meal with a large salad. When you order your meal, select vegetables or fruit instead of fries. If you have to have dessert, try to order fruit.

Experts have tested diets. They found that people who concentrate on eating a lot of high water content and high fiber food, without giving up favorite treats, tend to take off weight and keep it off.
