Being a Vegetarian Helps the Environment
Becoming a vegetarian helps you in more ways than you could possible imagine. Sticking to a vegetarian diet keeps you healthy and can save you money too because your grocery bills are much lower. Most people are aware of these benefits, but not many realise that being vegetarian helps the planet too.
Producing 1 calorie of food from animals consumes around 11 times more fossil fuel than you have to use produce 1 calorie of food from fruits and vegetables. Being a vegetarian drastically reduces your carbon footprint immediately.
Producing calories from plants consumes far less water than producing food from meat. At first this seems counter intuitive to most people/ They are aware that the plants in their garden consume a lot of water, but because they do not raise livestock they forget that they too consume a lot of water each day. When you think of how much water a cow drinks on a daily basis it is fairly obvious that they consume far more water than plants. However, it is surprising that producing meat takes 3 to 11 times more water than to produce the same number of calories from plants.
1 IB of beef requires about 16 IBs of grains to produce a pound of turkey takes around 5 IBs of grain. It obviously makes far more sense to eat that grain yourself directly. You get far more energy from 16IBs of grain than you would from eating a pound of meat. Given that our agricultural resources are limited it makes sense to use them wisely.
On a daily basis vast swathes of rain forest are cut down for various reasons. One of the main reasons is to make room for livestock or to grow grains to feed them. Once cut down this kind of forest takes decades to replace. When you consider that the trees in these forests act as the lungs of the world it is stupid to cut them down in the way we are doing now.
Not everyone will want to become full blown vegetarians, but just cutting back on meat still helps. Not eating meat on two days of the week makes a big difference.
